The Korte Company was selected to renovate the aging Building 525 at the Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois. The project includes a 24,000-square-foot renovation and the addition of a new bowling center. The 20,315-square-foot addition includes 28 bowling lanes with a state-of-the-art sound system and lighting package.
The existing building, constructed circa 1966, was in need of an upgrade to function properly in today’s entertainment environment. The outdated “Nitro” nightclub was divided into two functions: a 184-seat stadium theater with a new state-of-the-art projector and sound system and a multi-purpose room with a raised stage to host events such as concerts, dances and formal functions.
A bar and concession area provides refreshments to the theater and multi-purpose room. It also has direct circulation to the existing food preparation area for catered events. The existing food court was enlarged and updated with an open plan incorporating a new order and pick-up counter, a sports bar and a gaming/billiards area.
Restrooms have been redesigned to increase the number of plumbing fixtures as well as to bring the facility up to current codes and the Architectural Barriers Act. Structural upgrades have been provided to increase the building’s Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection capabilities. A new ramp will be constructed in the Beer Garden for accessibility. A new contemporary entry portal updates the existing 1960s entry, and a new “Family Entry” will be constructed towards the west parking for convenience.
