At The Korte Company, we take pride not only in getting the job done, but also in making sure every team member gets home safe from the jobsite. Decades before it became industry standard, we instituted a documented construction safety program. In the years that have passed, we’ve invested heavily in safety by creating Korte University, a continuing safety training program for our team, and establishing a seasoned safety crew led by Safety Director Kevin Moorhead and more than 20 Safety Trained Supervisors (STS).
As part of our continuing safety initiative, we participated in OSHA’s annual National Safety Stand Down to Prevent Falls in Construction campaign. In eight different states, we led 12 safety stand downs, training close to 200 workers in ways to prevent falls. In 2014, according to OSHA, more than 291 workers suffered fatal falls from elevation — these deaths were preventable. The Korte Company takes safety training seriously, and we continually strive to increase the awareness to all our partners that accidents and incidents are preventable. The Korte Company has worked more than three years without a lost-time accident, and we look forward to continuing this great accomplishment.
The 12 stand downs presented an opportunity to raise awareness, further train our team and lead safety training for other crews on these jobsites. In Whidbey Island, Washington, where we are currently working on three separate projects, we conducted a one-and-a-half-hour presentation on fall prevention, which included a demonstration by the Capital Safety demonstration truck.
The presentation featured the necessity of fall protection equipment as well as its proper use. We also covered OSHA’s Focus 4 in construction hazards, along with The Korte Company’s moto of “Safety State of Mind,” one of our signature safety programs.
