The Korte Company provided Design-Build services for the renovation of Building 1338, a hangar facility at Naval Station Mayport. Building 1338 houses two Navigation Shiphandling Seamanship Trainers (NSST) and support spaces. The NSST’s provide life-like simulations to train Navy bridge teams.
The 14,015-square-foot facility includes 8,865 square feet of high bay area that houses the multi-level NSST trainer modules. The facility also houses support areas for the NSST including briefing rooms, offices, storage and NSST server rooms.
The multi-level NSST trainers are built to provide support for the government-provided NSST training equipment including large projector mounting rings, video projectors and large curved video display screens. The NSST incorporates a large sound system to enhance the aural aspects of the training simulations. An acoustical engineer was a critical member of the team providing recommendations regarding acoustical separation criteria between the NSST and adjacent spaces and sound control panels in the NSST training areas.
Building 1338’s roof, structure, building enclosure and concrete floor were demolished with only the wall and structure footings remaining. The mechanical and electrical systems were also removed. A new 7-foot insulated perimeter wall was constructed with a pre-engineered insulated metal building wall, roof and structure above the perimeter wall.
The project met the requirements of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the St. John’s River Water Management District, and applicable UFC criteria, as well as Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) considerations.
