On June 20th, the United States Marine Corps will descend on St. Louis for Marine Week 2011. One of week’s main projects will be the construction of a demonstration garden at the corner of South Kingshighway and Shenandoah. The garden – the brainchild of Mary Lou Green, Yvette Hartsfield and the rest of the Operation Brightside team – will be used to offer the entire community hands-on educational opportunities in the subject matters of native plantings, smart green practices and much more. Thanks to the newly built garden, the community will now have a landmark promoting a cleaner and greener St. Louis.
During the five-day event, 20 marines will plant 2,764 perennials and lay 285 square yards of sod. The garden will be 12,600 square feet in total size, 6,500 square feet of which will be permeable surface for smart watering and irrigation.
Todd Korte, President & CEO of The Korte Company stated, “We’re proud to be a part of a project that has such a direct and positive impact on the community. Through the years, we’ve partnered with the U.S. Marine Corps on many projects across the country, so being able to work with them in our own backyard is something we’re definitely excited about.”
