The Korte Company was the Prime Design-Build Contractor and Korte Design, Inc. was the Designer of Record for the design-build 144-person dormitory at the Cannon Air Force Base located in Curry County, New Mexico. The 51,129-square-foot, three-story dormitory was the third facility constructed on the Base to complete the Dormitory Campus design initiative. The building is arranged in a very efficient, three-story, open courtyard, linear configuration with a central core area, which includes the main building support areas and common gathering area.
Thirty-six quads consist of four bedroom units, living area, kitchen dining, and laundry. Bedrooms are 140 square feet, single occupancy with a private bathroom, walk-in closet, dresser, and desk unit. The building common area includes an office, staff toilet, multi-purpose area, vending area, mechanical room, electrical room, communication rooms, and mail service area. Utility rooms are provided at each Quad. Bulk storage is located north of the dormitory and near the parade route to allow for easy mobility of equipment.
The exterior is composed of load-bearing light gauge metal studs with masonry veneer at first level and stucco above and a standing seam metal roof. The main entrance to the new dormitory facility is centrally located within the north façade of the building. A bike shelter is provided for occupants. New parking lot entrances have been provided and existing parking stalls have been reconfigured to accommodate the 144-person dormitory, including 231 re-striped vehicle spaces, (12 dedicated for Fuel Efficiency vehicles), eight Americans with Disabilities Act parking spaces and 12 motorcycle spaces.
The facility was constructed within the controlled perimeter of high-security installation utilizing applicable UFC 4-010-01 Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection standards and construction methodologies and achieved LEED Silver certification from the USGBC.
