The Korte Company first partnered with The Hershey Company to deliver the original 1.1 million-square-foot Design-Build facility in Edwardsville, Illinois. When the need came to expand its operations — as they often do — The Korte Company was there to help facilitate their expansion plans.
The 292,410-square-foot expansion and facility improvements increased the total size of the Hershey Midwest Distribution Center to over 1.3 million square feet. The warehouse addition is primarily steel frame construction with exterior metal panels. A thermoplastic olefin roof system was selected because of its UV-resistant and heat-resistant qualities.
The expansion includes 285,000 square feet of additional warehouse area and 7,400 square feet of office space. The new warehouse space features 48 loading docks, maintenance areas, conveyor equipment, storage racks and a forklift battery charging area.
The administration and office additions and improvements replace the existing satellite office spaces and include areas for trucker receiving, as well as managerial and hourly staff. The managerial office area includes individual offices, open office areas, a kitchenette, a conference room and toilets. Two separate breakrooms are also part of the scope of work and include a large vending area and bathroom facilities.
The design meets all required codes, including Food Grade Warehousing Standards and International Energy Conservation Code. Sitework included 135 additional parking spaces as well as exterior landscaping design and installation.
