As the world’s largest package delivery company, United Parcel Service’s (UPS) integrated global ground and air network is central to its continued success. UPS delivers approximately 20 million pieces globally per day, through nearly 1,800 operating facilities.
The 44,000-square-foot Des Moines International Airport operating facility required additional capacity, and The Korte Company partnered with UPS to deliver a 9,000-square-foot Design-Build solution. To facilitate the aggressive three-month expansion project, The Korte Company worked closely with UPS throughout all phases of the design and construction schedule to ensure operations continued without interruption.
The Design-Build expansion encompassed selective demolition to the existing building to accommodate three additional modular metal building additions totaling 9,000 square feet.
Additional improvements included loading dock renovations and the installation of new dock equipment. Integrated fire suppression systems (wet pipe sprinklers) were installed as well as new gas pipe supply lines for the newly installed unit heaters.
Improvements were also made to the existing 42,000-square-foot site which included selective demolition to allow for the new construction of stormwater structures, concrete staging pads, heavy-duty asphalt paving, site lighting and modifications to the existing security perimeter fence.
